Braces Q & A

How do braces work?

Braces put pressure on your teeth to slowly move them into proper alignment. The pressure encourages your teeth and roots to move. As your teeth straighten, it becomes easier to care for your oral health and makes eating more comfortable as your bite pressure is spread across all of your teeth.

Do I need braces?

There are several reasons why you might need or want braces. The most common conditions braces correct include:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Too much or too little space between teeth
  • Lower teeth situated too far behind upper teeth (overbite)
  • Upper teeth situated behind your lower teeth (underbite)
  • Upper teeth stick out too far (overjet)

Braces can correct most teeth alignment issues to improve your smile. By correcting the spacing and alignment of your teeth, it’s easier to maintain proper oral hygiene.

Are braces uncomfortable?

Traditional braces are made of metal. Most people find braces comfortable to wear, although they may sometimes cause slight discomfort at the start of your treatment or after adjustments. For this reason, some people choose Invisalign® clear aligners from Joseph Dental Group as an alternative to metal braces.

How long will I have to wear braces?

Braces are customized to your needs, and the length of your treatment depends on the position your teeth are when you start. Some people wear braces for a few months, while others wear them for nearly three years. Joseph Dental Group’s orthodontist can estimate your required treatment time before you get braces.

How often do I need to see the orthodontist for braces?

After you get your braces, you will keep regular appointments with the orthodontic team to check on your progress. Traditional braces usually need adjustments every six to eight weeks as your teeth continue to move until reaching their final position.

Braces are an ideal treatment for straightening teeth, correcting your bite, and improving the aesthetics of your smile.
