Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a long-lasting restoration to replace one or more missing teeth with a prosthetic tooth and root. A dental implant is combined with a crown, dental bridge, or partial denture to restore your oral health.

Dental implants are as strong as natural teeth and look and feel the same. Implants not only replace the missing tooth or teeth, but they stimulate the jaw and help prevent jawbone deterioration that normally occurs after tooth loss.

Why should I replace a missing tooth?

You may wonder why you need to replace a missing tooth if the gap where the tooth was is not visible. The fact is, missing teeth cause oral health complications. When the root of a tooth is missing, the jaw begins to recede and deteriorate.

Jawbone deterioration causes your facial features to change. Also, the supporting soft tissues around your teeth weaken after losing a tooth, which can lead to additional tooth loss.

How is the dental implant secured in my mouth?

If you are a candidate for a dental implant, you’ll visit Joseph Dental Group for a series of appointments. At the first appointment, 3-D X-ray imaging of your mouth is used to determine if your jawbone can support an implant. If all looks healthy, an appointment for placing the implant in the jaw is scheduled.

During the second appointment, the implant post is placed into the jawbone. The incision is closed with sutures and bite impressions are made. Up to four teeth may be replaced with a single dental implant.

After the implant post is placed, your jawbone needs three to six months to heal. Your customized dental restoration is placed on the implant at the next appointment, restoring the function and appearance of your missing tooth or teeth.

Are dental implants permanent restorations?

Dental implants are considered permanent restorations and last 25 years or more with proper care and maintenance. Alternative dental restorations for replacing missing teeth only last between five and 15 years.

Can I get dental implants?

Not everyone is a candidate for a dental implant, but if you are an adult in good health and don’t smoke, you are likely able to get dental implants. The Joseph Dental Group team examines your gums and jawbone to determine if both are healthy and strong enough to support the implant.

Dental implants aren’t recommended if you:

  • Have uncontrolled heart disease or diabetes
  • Smoke heavily
  • Have gum disease
  • Are a female under 16 years of age
  • Are a male under 18 years of age
