Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why do my teeth look yellow?

Yellow and stained teeth are often an unwelcome sign of aging. As we get older, tooth enamel weakens and begins to chip and flake away. The thinning enamel reveals the inside layers which are naturally yellow in color.

In addition to the natural aging process, other factors can cause teeth discoloration, including:

  • Inadequate oral hygiene practices
  • Drinking dark-colored beverages
  • Consuming dark-colored foods
  • Smoking or using chewing tobacco
  • Excessive fluoride exposure

Some prescription medications may also contribute to yellow teeth, especially those containing tetracycline.

How do teeth whitening treatments work?

Teeth whitening treatments use FDA-approved solutions to remove stains and whiten your teeth.  At Joseph Dental Group, the team uses Philips Zoom! Teeth Whitening to make your teeth up to eight shades whiter. Your dentist prepares you for treatment by placing a rubber dam over your gums and tongue.

Once your gums and tongue are protected, the team applies the bleaching solution to the surface of your teeth and allows it to dry for 10-15 minutes. Once dry, a special light is applied to the teeth to start the bleaching reaction. The process is repeated 3-4 times.

Am I a candidate for teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening treatments aren’t right for everyone. The best candidates for professional teeth whitening have healthy gums and healthy teeth without a lot of dental fillings or restorations. Teeth whitening isn’t suggested if you are:

  • Pregnant or lactating
  • Have extensive dental restorations
  • Under 16 years of age
  • Have periodontal disease, tooth decay, cavities, or exposed roots
  • Experiencing sensitive teeth

Also, if you are allergic to peroxide you should not have your teeth whitened.

Are teeth whitening results permanent?

Teeth whitening results usually last for 4-6 months. You can help extend the results through good oral hygiene practices including brushing and flossing twice daily, not smoking, and avoiding dark beverages such as red wine, cola, and coffee.

Are there any side effects of teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening may cause tooth sensitivity temporarily. The whitening gel causes temporary tooth dehydration as it activates. You should avoid consuming any food or beverage dark in color until the tooth has rehydrated, and stay away from extremely hot or cold beverages during this time to lessen the sensitivity.

Don’t let your yellow or discolored teeth prevent you from sharing your smile and living confidently. To request a teeth whitening consultation at Joseph Dental Group, call the office, or click the online booking tool.
