Tooth Colored Fillings Q & A

What are tooth-colored fillings?

Teeth damaged by decay are affected by holes in the enamel called cavities. Cavities require fillings to prevent the damage from progressing to gum disease, infection, and tooth loss. Joseph Dental Group uses tooth-colored fillings to repair cavities so the finished tooth looks and feels like your natural teeth.

What are tooth-colored fillings made from?

Traditionally, dentists used silver or gold dental fillings to repair cavities. While these substances are strong and prevent the tooth from further decay, these types of fillings are very visible. Today, dental fillings are made from porcelain or composite resin, materials matched to the color of your natural teeth.

How are cavities filled?

If your dentist determines you need dental fillings, a numbing agent is applied if needed to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Once the numbing agent is working, your dentist prepares the damaged teeth by removing all signs of decay with special dental tools.

After the decay is removed, a tooth-colored dental filling material is placed in the cavity to prevent future decay. A light is applied to harden the filling so it matches the strength of your natural teeth. The dental filling material is trimmed to the correct size and your bite checked to ensure your mouth closes comfortably.

For tooth damage beyond what a dental filling can repair, Joseph Dental Group recommends other dental restorations as needed, including root canals, crowns, bridges, or dental implants.

Are dental fillings permanent?

Dental fillings last a lifetime when properly cared for. You can prolong the life of your fillings with good oral hygiene practices that include brushing and flossing twice daily, visiting Joseph Dental Group twice annually for dental cleanings and exams, and avoiding chewing on hard objects or foods.

Adjusting your diet can help prolong the life of your fillings. Dental fillings may crack or chip from hard foods while chewy foods can pull dental fillings out.

Dr. Suh completed advanced dental education including the Dawson Academy Core Curriculum to ensure tooth-colored fillings are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional.
